This screenshot of a social media post by a Vietnamese tour guide claims that a group of Filipino tourists were charged VND1.5 million (US$58) for a 2km taxi ride in Hanoi on the evening of June 30, 2025.

The incident, which has sparked public outcry online, allegedly occurred between Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and the intersection of Hang Tre and Lo Su Streets.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, H., a local tour guide, said the group had initially planned to walk to a nearby restaurant, but heavy rain forced them to take a taxi instead.

After reaching their destination, the group claimed they were asked to pay VND1.5 million for the taxi ride.

“They were mostly students and too intimidated to protest, so they reported the incident to us,” H. said.

The tourists also recounted that although they had clearly stated their destination, the taxi driver took a longer route, justifying it by claiming the road ahead was one-way and inaccessible due to the rain.

H. later posted the incident on social media, prompting strong reactions from the public demanding strict action if the allegations prove true.

A check of the route revealed the actual distance between the two locations was only about two kilometers.

In Tuoi Tre's estimation, typical taxi fares for a two-kilometer ride range from VND30,000 ($1.2) VND50,000 ($2).
