Hanoi blocks 1.2km of Nguyen Trai Street for anti-flood project

The Hanoi Department of Construction on Saturday began fencing off a 1.2-kilometer section of Nguyen Trai Street in Thanh Xuan Ward to build an underground drainage system, as part of a flood control project in the city.

Barriers are scheduled to remain in place until May 31, the department said on Friday.

In particular, the longest affected stretch runs from the Royal City complex to Nguyen Trai - Vu Trong Phung Intersection, spanning 790 meters.

Contractors were set to install fixed barriers in segments of 20 to 30 meters to construct box culverts in the middle of the road.

The remaining road space, ranging from about 5 to 12 meters wide on each side of the barriers, will allow vehicles to pass through the construction zone.

Work will be carried out in stages: once a section is completed and the road surface restored with asphalt concrete, crews will move on to the next section.

Traffic restrictions will apply at certain median openings.

Vehicles entering Nguyen Trai Street from nearby roads and alleys within 50 meters of the barricades, measured toward Nga Tu So Intersection, will not be allowed to make U-turns at those openings.

Drivers traveling straight along Nguyen Trai Street toward Ring Road No. 3 must instead proceed to the next available median opening to turn around and return toward Nga Tu So.

At Cu Loc - Nguyen Trai Intersection, cars coming from Cu Loc Street will be prohibited from turning left or making U-turns at the DR31 turnaround point.

Instead, vehicles must use the opening at DR32 or the area beneath Thuong Dinh Station to reverse direction.

Besides, soft barriers will be installed to prevent motorcycles from traveling against traffic through the construction area, a measure intended to maintain road safety.

Another section, measuring over 300 meters from Nguyen Trai - Vu Trong Phung Intersection to the footbridge in front of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, is equipped with movable barriers.

Construction will be carried out in rolling segments 10 meters long and four meters wide, positioned 0.5 to 1.5 meters from the curb on the side heading from Nga Tu So toward Ring Road No. 3.

The remaining roadway, some 16 to 18 meters wide, remains open to traffic.

Work on this section takes place overnight, from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.

The final stretch, some 150 meters long from the footbridge near the university to Nguyen Trai - Nguyen Tuan Intersection, is also fenced off with movable barriers.
