Hanoi plans to resume operation of tourist boats in West Lake

Hanoi is currently mulling over the restoration of tourist boats and other services in West Lake after a six-year ban.

The Hanoi People's Committee recently issued draft regulations on the management of West Lake, which highlights 12 types of services allowed to operate in the lake.

These services include tourist boats, canoes, and water bicycle services, SUP, kayaking, and dragon boat services, water passenger transport, windsurfing, sailing, diving, and more.

The Hanoi People's Committee also plans to organize many other cultural and tourism activities in West Lake, including art and sport performances, water musical performances, hot air balloon festivals, paragliding, and golf courses.

According to the draft content, Tay Ho District authorities will manage all services provided at West Lake.

The lake will have eight marinas and waterways tourist routes, the draft regulations stated, adding that Tay Ho District authorities will be in charge of organizing and managing services in the lake.

In 2015, Hanoi authorities directed the Tay Ho District administration to request that organizations with old and unused boats to move from the West Lake area.

By 2017, the city had completely banned all business, service, sports, tourism, entertainment, aquaculture, and fishing activities in the lake.

Ship owners were required to dismantle or relocate their vehicles from West Lake.

After six years, four out of 147 boats have remained in the lake, affecting urban aesthetics and posing environmental problems.

“The owners of these boats are demanding compensation, but there is no basis for compensation,” said Nguyen Dinh Khuyen, chairman of Tay Ho District People's Committee.

The administration is expected to forcefully move the boats out of West Lake in the second quarter of the year, Khuyen continued, adding that it may be difficult to do so because some of the boats weigh 400-500 metric tons.
