Streptococcus suis is a bacterium commonly transmitted through contact with infected pigs or consumption of raw pork.
The case was recorded during the week of July 25 to August 1.
This brings the Vietnamese capital's total in 2025 to seven infections and one death, equivalent to figures in the same period last year.
The deceased patient developed symptoms on July 16, including high fever, headache, and fatigue.
He was admitted to Dan Phuong General Hospital on July 21 with a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, headache, and purplish rashes on his face, ears, chest, and abdomen.
The patient was later transferred to Bach Mai Hospital, where he exhibited respiratory failure and widespread cyanosis.
Despite intensive care, his condition worsened.
His family requested discharge, and he later passed away at home.
Tests confirmed he had contracted Streptococcus suis.
During the July 25-August 1 week, Hanoi also recorded a rabies outbreak in pet dogs in Bo De Ward, where five residents were bitten and one person was exposed through contact.
All of them have since received post-exposure prophylaxis.
Since the start of 2025, the city has documented four rabies outbreaks in dogs, but no human fatalities have been reported.
Hanoi CDC said it continues to monitor infectious disease outbreaks across the city, including ongoing dengue fever clusters, and is training local health staff in outbreak prevention and control.
