Hanoi to spend over $1.3mn dredging iconic lake

The dredging of Hoan Kiem Lake is scheduled for the end of this year

Authorities in Hanoi are set to spend VND30 billion (US$1.31 million) dredging its iconic Hoan Kiem Lake.

The municipal People’s Committee has tasked the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company with evaluating and implementing the project.

A brief examination indicated that the volume of mud at the bottom of lake has exceeded normal levels, with mud in several areas of the lake measuring one meter thick despite water levels of only 50 centimeters.

Pollution levels on the bed of the lake are also becoming increasingly serious, the assessment revealed.

The Sewerage and Drainage Company is expected to begin dredging over 57,000 cubic meters of Hoan Kiem Lake by the end of the year.

The lake will remain at its current water level throughout the project and authorities have planned for all dredging to take place at least seven meters from the bank in order to minimize any chance of subsidence.

Hoan Kiem Lake, also referred to as Ho Guom (Sword Lake), is a popular attraction in the historical center of Hanoi. It is known as a major scenic area of the city and serves as a focal point for public life.

Turtle Tower stands on a small island near the center of the lake, while the northern shore of the lake is home to Jade Island, atop which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Ngoc Son Temple) sits.
