Heavy downpour causes widespread flooding, traffic chaos in Ho Chi Minh City

A torrential rain hit Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday evening, with the highest rainfall recorded in Thu Duc and former Binh Duong areas, resulting in widespread flooding and prolonged traffic congestion.

Around Thu Duc Market, one of the city’s flooding hotspots, floodwaters submerged multiple roads.

Half of Pham Van Dong Boulevard from the Kha Van Can intersection to the To Ngoc Van intersection was underwater, severely disrupting traffic flow.

At the Pham Van Dong-To Ngoc Van junction, a large amount of gravel washed down from the nearby railway line, spreading across the road and creating hazards for commuters.

After the downpour, a thick layer of gravel remained on the street.

Flooding around Thu Duc Market became so severe that authorities blocked access to ensure public safety.

Inside homes, mud and water swept in, forcing residents to begin immediate clean-up efforts.

According to the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center, rainfall levels were recorded at 69mm at Di An Station, 59.2mm at Thuan An Station, and 53.4mm at Thu Duc Station.

The downpour was caused by the northward shift of a subtropical high-pressure ridge, combined with a wind convergence zone forming over southern Vietnam.

Moisture from the sea moved inland under high daytime temperatures, creating intense atmospheric instability and triggering strong convective clouds that brought heavy showers and thunder.
