Heavy downpour inundates streets in Hanoi

The rain turned many streets in the Vietnamese capital into 'rivers'

A heavy rain submerged many streets in Hanoi on Monday afternoon, causing difficulties for travelers.

The torrential rain started at around 1:30 pm and ended at 3:00 pm.

The rainfall hit 82 millimeters in Tan Mai Ward, Hoang Mai District; 104 millimeters in Thanh Tri District; 216 millimeters in Tran Phu Ward, Hoang Mai District; and 144 millimeters in Yen So Ward, Hoang Mai District, according to automatic rainfall measuring stations of Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company Limited.

As a result, many streets were 0.1-0.3 meters submerged under rainwater, including Trieu Khuc and To Hieu Streets in Ha Dong District, as well as Bui Xuong Trach and Nguyen Trai Streets in Thanh Xuan District.

A one-kilometer section of Le Van Luong Street was also inundated by 0.2-0.5 meters.

Many motorbike riders had to travel on sidewalks, while some vehicles broke down as they ran through deeply flooded segments.

The northern, Central Highlands, and southern regions will continue experiencing moderate and heavy rains until Wednesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

It warned of floods and landslides in mountainous areas and inundation in low-lying areas.
