Heavy rain triggers ‘trash slide’ in Da Lat

Rubbish from a landfill located on high ground has been washed downhill following a downpour last week

A large amount of garbage from a dump site located on the high ground overlooking agricultural farms in the Central Highlands city of Da Lat has been washed downhill following a heavy rain last week.

The incident occurred at the Cam Ly landfill on Thursday last week, covering plants being grown on many farms in a valley down below with thick layers of trash, according to local farmers.

Cam Ly is the largest dump site in Da Lat, a famous tourist city with a population of nearly 400,000 people in Lam Dong Province.

The landfill is located on a 60-meter-high hill in Ward 5, overlooking a large agriculture production zone situated in the nearby valley.

As Da Lat and many other areas in the Central Highlands were hit by a prolonged downpour last week, a large amount of rubbish in Cam Ly was washed downhill by rainwater.

About one hectare of farming in the agriculture production zone was filled with the waste as a result.

The trash in these farms piled up to four to five meters in height, completely burying the plants grown by local residents and releasing a unbearable stench.

Liquid coming out of the waste has also contaminated a nearby stream, which negatively impacted tens of hectares of crops in the locality.

According to the Ward 5 administration, the valley was previously zoned for forestry activities, but local residents have been operating their farms and earned a stable living for many years there.

The incident has been reported to the municipal administration for a proper solution.
