Water level of rivers and canals in Ho Chi Minh City was forecast to rise rapidly as tide will peak in the upcoming days, while warnings of inundation has also been issued.
High tide started affecting water level in the southern metropolis on Sunday and is expected to reach its peak on Tuesday, according to the Southern Hydro-meteorological Center.
Water at the Phu An Station was recorded as 1.63 meters high on Saturday and will peak at 1.67 meters on Tuesday.
It is expected to lower slightly to 1.66 meters on Wednesday and remain at such level for three to four days.
Tidal water will be at its maximum height between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm daily.
Last year’s highest tide also reached nearly 1.7 meters around early October, the center added.
According to the observation of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday, such streets as Huynh Tan Phat in District 7, Quoc Huong in District 2, and Le Van Luong in Go Vap District were already flooded, creating immense challenges for local residents.
Competent authorities and district-level administrations have been tasked with making preparations for areas that are susceptible to inundation during the period.
Local embankments will be fortified and sewers dredged to minimize the effects of the flooding.
Traffic police officers will be mobilized and signs will be erected to provide direction and ensure safety for commuters.
Rain accompanied by thunderstorms has also been forecast to dampen southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, in the next days, which may exacerbate the inundation.
