Since the re-establishment of Ben Thanh Ward on July 1, the Ward Party Committee has directed local police to form task forces to intensify inspections of business establishments with heightened risk of social vices.
Coordinating with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Security's specialized units, the local forces have addressed a range of criminal, narcotic, and economic violations.
Through systematic inspections and operations, Ben Thanh Ward police have handled 86 cases, issuing fines amounting to VND302.5 million (US$11,523).
They inspected 12 sensitive businesses with five located on Bui Vien Street and detected seven individuals who tested positive for narcotics.
They also handed over three cases of illicit production and trade of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, involving 18 individuals to the municipal police, and seized 348 metal cylinders suspected of containing nitrous oxide.
They detected and handled one prostitution case involving five people, with one individual facing criminal charges.
These enforcement efforts have led to noticeable improvements in public order, environmental hygiene, and the reduction of sidewalk encroachment along Bui Vien Walking Street.
These are evidence of the local government’s commitment to transforming the area into a more civilized and welcoming pedestrian zone.
The Ben Thanh Ward Party Committee plans to sustain these efforts through tougher measures, including enhanced patrols, strict handling of violations related to public space encroachments, tighter business oversight, and the promotion of cultural activities, such as street performances and periodic cultural events, to revive Bui Vien as a tourist-friendly destination.
Local police have conducted public awareness campaigns on urban order, fire safety, and legal regulations combating social vices in business operations.
Local businesses have also been required to sign commitments to adhere to all requirements.
These initiatives come amid growing public concerns about the decline of Bui Vien, once celebrated as a vibrant cross-cultural hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
Recent reports have highlighted tourists’ disappointment with noise and disorder, reinforcing the need for revitalization of the area’s image.
