Ho Chi Minh City doctors remove shoe squeaker left 7 years in 15-year-old’s lung

Doctors at Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday announced that they had successfully extracted a squeaker from the lung of a 15-year-old boy from Phu Yen Province, south-central Vietnam.

Around seven to eight years ago, while the boy was blowing a squeaker taken from a child’s shoe, his friend patted him on the back, causing him to choke on the squeaker.

He showed no signs of breathing difficulty and an X-ray taken at the time displayed no issues either.

However, about a month ago, the boy began to develop a chronic cough, so doctors suspected he had a foreign object lodged in his airway.

Following an examination at Children’s Hospital 1, doctors identified the squeaker stucked in the bronchial subsegment of his right lung.

During a challenging 90-minute procedure, a surgical team put the boy under anesthesia, controlled his bleeding, and performed an endoscopic removal.

After an initial failure, the surgeons succeeded in extracting the foreign object from the boy’s airway.
