The initiative follows a directive from the city’s administration to boost regional connectivity through infrastructure.
Vuong Quang Hung, head of the road traffic construction management unit at the municipal Department of Construction, said the multi-level road design has been implemented by many countries to optimize urban land use.
In Ho Chi Minh City, this approach is being considered for a high-speed route linking the Southern Saigon urban area to Long Thanh Airport via the Phu My 2 Bridge.
The project segment passing through Hoang Quoc Viet Street in District 7 has a narrow urban planning boundary, making traditional ground-level road solutions unfeasible.
Therefore, developing multi-tiered sections is seen as a viable solution, offering better traffic capacity, reducing land clearance costs, and minimizing disruption to residents.
The proposed express route would start from Nguyen Huu Tho Street, head east through Hoang Quoc Viet and Dao Tri Streets, cross the Dong Nai River, and connect to Lien Cang Road and Road 25C in Dong Nai’s Nhon Trach District.
The full route would span approximately 16.7 kilometers and include six lanes for motor vehicles and two lanes for rudimentary transport, with an estimated investment of VND21.484 trillion (US$828 million).
During recent meetings, leaders from Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai agreed to proceed with related infrastructure projects including the Cat Lai Bridge, Dong Nai 2 Bridge, and Phu My 2 Bridge.
Under the agreement, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee will act as the lead agency for implementing the Phu My 2 Bridge project.
The construction and finance authorities from both localities are coordinating a suitable investment method and funding mechanism.
The plan will be submitted to the respective People’s Committees by the end of this month, with approval targeted for the final quarter and groundbreaking expected in 2027.
The Phu My 2 Bridge project is part of the city’s broader vision to develop 10 high-speed trunk roads—corridors designed for rapid, uninterrupted travel—connecting central districts with regional routes.
These roads may include elevated, underground, or hybrid structures depending on local conditions.
The Phu My 2 corridor, along with elevated expressways along Nguyen Huu Tho Street and Road 25C, will form a vital axis between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports.
