Ho Chi Minh City mulls connecting more public transport services to rail station

Ho Chi Minh City mulls connecting more public transport services to rail station

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed solutions to enhance commuter connections with the Saigon Railway Station in District 3 by using public transport services, including public bikes and four-wheeled electric vehicles.

According to the department, the Saigon Railway Station is currently connected with general traffic infrastructure via two gates on Nguyen Phuc Nguyen Street.

As for its connections with public transport services, only bus route No. 7 is directly linked with the rail station.

There are also bus routes Nos. 13, 30 and 65 to nearby Cach Mang Thang Tam Street. The street, however, is often congested during rush hours and busses are typically late.

Streets leading to the Saigon Railway Station, such as Nguyen Thong and Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, are narrow, hindering the operation of large buses but still appropriately sized for small buses and taxis.

The department shared that the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transportation Management Center has been working on selecting the operator of bus services linking Ben Thanh Station on the city’s metro line to the Saigon Railway Station once the metro route is completed.

Saigon Public Transport Co. Ltd. is also piloting electric four-wheelers in District 1 and part of District 4, District 5, and District 6.

After the Law of Road Traffic Order and Safety and the Law on Roads take effect on January 1, 2025, four-wheel electric vehicles are expected to run to the Saigon Railway Station.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has also tasked the Public Transportation Management Center with collecting opinions about locations for planned public bike rental services to connect with the Saigon Railway Station.
