Ho Chi Minh City orders collection of garbage from canal pending contract extension

Waste along the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal in Ho Chi Minh City has been collected under an urgent order of the municipal People’s Committee, in response to media reports highlighting the build-up of garbage in this waterway.

Garbage on the canal had yet to be collected since early last month as a contract for its removal already expired.

As a result, trash filled the surface of the canal section in Tan Binh District.

The municipal government tasked relevant units with maintaining the waste collection and quickly completing procedures to initiate a new tender for the collection and transport of garbage from the canal.

Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Co. Ltd., which was responsible for waste collection on the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday that the company had sent workers to collect waste on the canal from Sunday morning and would continue the job pending the contract signing.

In 2019, the municipal People’s Committee assigned the Management Center of Waterway System under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to hold tenders to choose garbage collecting units for city canals, including the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, director of the center Nguyen Ngoc Tuan told Tuoi Tre on Sunday.

In September last year, the city issued new price norms for the service.

The Management Center of Waterway System had to build new price units and bidding solutions and submit them to the municipal administration for approval.

The center has fulfilled the jobs but the application of the new price norms takes time.

During this period, the center cooperated with Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Co. Ltd. to keep collecting trash on the canal, especially during the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday in February.

Despite the contract expiring on December 31 last year, Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Co. Ltd. continued to provide the garbage collection service without charge for about a month.

However, it later discontinued the garbage collection service due to a lack of funds.

Tuan also suggested that local authorities work to prevent residents from littering.
