Ho Chi Minh City plans to charge cars for entering city center after completion of 7 metro links

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a plan to charge fees for cars entering the city center, which will be implemented in tandem with public transport development and the construction and operation of seven metro lines.

The fee collection is one of the city’s 27 detailed missions for its master plan to boost access to public transport and limit the use of personal vehicles during the 2021-30 period.

Originally, the city proposed to charge cars for entering the city center during the 2021-25 period, but the plan was delayed.

The municipal Department of Transport stated in a recent report to the Ho Chi Minh City administration that the fee collection would follow a suitable road map, ensuring compliance with traffic infrastructure and public transport standards.

As a result, the implementation of charges for cars entering the city center is planned to begin after all seven metro lines become operational.

The plan is viewed as matching the city’s master planning revision until 2040 with a vision toward 2060, which had been submitted to the Ministry of Transport for consideration.

The general metro development plans in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have been completed and submitted to the all-powerful Politburo for approval.

The southern metropolis planned to simultaneously construct and complete seven metro lines spanning 355 kilometers by 2035.

Once these metro links are operational, the city’s public transport systems will meet 40-50 percent of residents’ travel demands.

As per its master planning revision until 2040 with a vision toward 2060, the city will have 10 metro lines stretching a total of 510 kilometers.

Ho Chi Minh City will complete the construction of seven lines by 2035 with a total capital of US$40.2 billion.

By 2045, three more lines with a combined length of 155 kilometers will be completed.

Apart from its metro development plan, the city will enhance efforts to control vehicle emissions in two phases, with the first focusing on increasing the launch of electric buses until 2030.

During the second phase, the city will complete its vehicle emissions control plan. Accordingly, the city will pilot an electric vehicle use program in outlying Can Gio District and some inner-city districts.

Metro line No. 1 in Ho Chi Minh City came on stream on December 22 after 12 years of construction, marking a historic milestone in the urban transport development of the southern metropolis.

The metro line spans 19.7 kilometers, from Ben Thanh in District 1 to Suoi Tien Coach Station in Thu Duc City, including 2.6 kilometers of underground railway and 17.1 kilometers of elevated track.

Operating daily from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, the metro offers 200 trips per day, each taking approximately 30 minutes, with intervals between trains ranging from eight to 12 minutes.
