Ho Chi Minh City police to provide Grab drivers with self-defense skills

Ho Chi Minh City police have signed a memorandum of understanding with Grab Company Limited to provide Grab drivers with guidance on self-defense and how to deal with criminals.

As part of the agreement, the municipal Department of Police will assist Grab Company in equipping its drivers with knowledge of certain laws, self-defense, and how to identify a criminal.

The drivers will also be instructed in how to react in particular situations when they run into an offender and how to make prompt reports to authorities when they spot a lawbreaker.

In addition, a hotline between the Ho Chi Minh City police department and Grab will be established for information exchange in emergency scenarios.

According to Jerry Lim, country head of Grab Vietnam, the collaboration will help ensure the safety of Grab drivers and passengers, thus contributing to the maintenance of social order and security.

Grab drivers in Ho Chi Minh City, and Vietnam in general, have faced a lot of dangers as many of them were robbed and even murdered.

In the latest case, two men were arrested by police officers in Hanoi in late September for stabbing to death an 18-year-old GrabBike driver before stealing his motorcycle.

In mid-July, officers in Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City apprehended a man for cutting the throat of a GrabBike driver and taking away his vehicle.

The victim survived the serious wound after being brought to the hospital by local residents.
