Ho Chi Minh City reflected through Vietnamese photographer’s lens

Tuoi Tre News would like to introduce a series of photos from a project showing Ho Chi Minh City in reflection, taken by local photographer Hoang Trung Thuy.

The photographer said he came up with the idea of taking photos of the city reflected in mirrors or water when he visited the Ham Nghi Flower Street during last year’s Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

Thuy, who called his project unexpected, was walking along the street when he suddenly saw a sparkling Ho Chi Minh City reflected on the surrounding buildings.

According to him, reflected photos not only bring a new flavour of photography but also include a combination of multiple dimensions, while showing objects’ past and present alike.

They are an abstract aesthetic and have a high requirement for creativity, he added.

“I want to describe a graceful old Saigon blended with a modern and dynamic Ho Chi Minh City,” said the photographer who spent the whole of last year finishing his project.

Below are the photos showing Ho Chi Minh City in reflection taken by Hoang Trung Thuy, as well as his thoughts on the pictures:

Located behind the luxury Sunrise City apartment buildings, the Him Lam new residential area in District 7 is changing day by day.

On a sunny morning, Thuy put his 144mm wide lens close to the glass surface of the Vincom shopping mall at the corner of Nguyen Hue and Le Thanh Ton Streets in District 1 to take this picture. The headquarters of the People’s Committee look gorgeous in the wind.

A tour bus stopped near the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica in District 1 one day. As tourists avidly photographed the scene, Thuy quickly captured them together with his own Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica reflected on the glass window.

A portrait of men with surprised gestures hung on the wall of a company. Thuy took the picture in the reflection of the Sunrise City apartment buildings on Nguyen Huu Tho Street, District 7. The photo shows a Ho Chi Minh City that changes every day.

The foot of the ads created a connection to the man’s walk in the picture. The big glass on the Diamond Plaza shopping mall in District 1 reflects a poetic and peaceful Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica.

Whenever Tet approaches, the Binh Dong area in District 8 is always crowded with people selling and buying ornamental plants. To Thuy, there is a different Binh Dong wharf. A small canoe stirs the water with the reflection on the flower boat on it.

The building of a company on Hai Ba Trung Street is paved with granite. The bus in the picture looks like it is twice the size.

At the Vietnamese-Japanese music exchange at the Youth Culture House in District 1, Thuy put his camera close to the granite stairs leading to the stage to take this picture.

At 8:00 pm on the evening of April 30, 2015 on Ham Nghi Street, District 1, Thuy pointed his camera toward to building No. 55 where people were waiting for a fireworks display. He took the photo at the moment the fireworks exploded, and the glass surface of the building reflected the Bitexco Financial Tower, the symbol of a dynamic Ho Chi Minh City.

From a coffee shop at the corner of Ton That Thiep and Nguyen Hue Streets in District 1, Thuy sees a different Bitexco. Two reflected images occur because of the unequal refraction from the reflection surface.

There is ‘countryside’ on the other bank of the Saigon River in Thu Thiem Peninsula. On this afternoon, Thuy was lucky enough to see a herd of buffalo walking in front of his eyes. He held the camera down to capture the reflected image on the water. One thing that makes the photo interesting is that it shows the silhouetted buffalo contrasted with the modern buildings in District 1.
