Ho Chi Minh City starts removing trees on downtown street for bridge construction

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have begun clearing green trees along a major street to prepare for the construction of a new bridge.

The city's Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1, in coordination with the Greenery and Park Company and relevant units, started chopping down trees along the sidewalks of Ton Duc Thang Street in District 1 on Tuesday.

During the first phase of the plan, 14 trees will be either felled or relocated.

Those that are still healthy will continue to be grown at Nong Lam (Agriculture and Forestry) University in Thu Duc District.

As per the scheme, a total of 258 trees along the section of Ton Duc Thang Street from Le Duan Street to the Saigon riverbank will be cut down to facilitate the construction of the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge.

The bridge will span over the Saigon River and connect District 1 and District 2.

About 115 out of 258 green trees will be brought to Nong Lam University, while the rest will be cut down for wood due to their old age.

The timber will be used to produce public objects such as tables, chairs, and wood sculptures.
