Ho Chi Minh City students create unmanned surface vehicle, agricultural aircraft

The vehicles are the brainchildren of two separate research teams

Two research teams of a Ho Chi Minh City-based university have introduced two student-made vehicles manufactured at just 50 percent of the cost of similar products already on the market in other countries.

The products, an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) and an agricultural aircraft for the aerial application of pesticides, were made by students of the University of Technology under the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City.

The USV, developed by a group led by Dr. Tran Ngoc Huy, is a compact, lightweight boat capable of planning routes that allow it to patrol or supervise an area, as well as follow subjects with precision thanks to a high-speed processor and innovative algorithm.

Meanwhile, Dr. Vu Ngoc Anh and her research group announced their development of a new unmanned aircraft meant to aid in the application of pesticides.

The aircraft can also be programmed to follow a certain route, breaking only to return to its dock to refill on pesticides before automatically resuming its duties.

According to the research group, the aircraft is meant to support farmers, help raise their productivity, and minimize their exposure to pesticides.

“Our aircraft for application of pesticides has a flying system similar to that of other remotely controlled aerial devices, like camera drones,” Anh said.
