Ho Chi Minh City to build 7 steel overpasses to ease traffic congestion

Ho Chi Minh City will build seven steel overpasses at major intersections to reduce chronic congestion, with projects scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2027, a city official told a recent meeting hosted by the municipal Party Committee.

The projects form part of the city’s long-term plan to address 28 congestion hotspots by 2030, according to Tran Quang Lam, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction.

The southern metropolis will prioritize steel overpasses at seven intersections, namely Cong Truong Dan Chu, Le Dai Hanh-3/2, Ly Thuong Kiet-3/2, Cach Mang Thang 8-Huynh Van Cu, National Highway 51-Phuoc Binh, National Highway 51-B1 Road, and DT.994C-30/4.

The department said previous steel overpasses at traffic hotspots such as Hang Xanh, Thu Duc, and Nguyen Kiem-Pham Van Dong have significantly improved traffic flow.

The new projects will be fast-tracked, with construction expected to begin this year and completion slated for 2027.

Phan Van Bay, a ride-hailing driver, said the intersections at Ly Thuong Kiet, Le Dai Hanh, and 3/2 Streets have suffered from severe congestion for many years, especially during rush hour.

He suggested authorities adjust traffic light cycles at the Le Dai Hanh-3/2 intersection as a short-term measure until the overpasses are built.

“Once completed, the overpasses will connect with existing structures and form a continuous traffic corridor, easing congestion at one of the city’s western gateways,” he said.
