Ho Chi Minh City to give $38 to each disadvantaged household on city renaming anniversary

The Ho Chi Minh City administration will provide VND1 million (US$38) in financial support to each disadvantaged household as part of a series of activities marking 50 years since Saigon-Gia Dinh City was renamed Ho Chi Minh City (July 2, 1976-2026).

The municipal Department of Culture and Sports said the support will be given to policy beneficiary families, poor and near-poor households, beneficiaries of social protection policies, and other disadvantaged groups.

According to the National Archives Center II, after Vietnam’s reunification on April 30, 1975, Gia Dinh Province and the capital city of Saigon under the former Saigon regime were merged to form Saigon-Gia Dinh City, later renamed Ho Chi Minh City on July 2, 1976, by a resolution of Vietnam’s law-making National Assembly.

Alongside the financial support, the city will hold a series of commemorative activities, including a floral tribute to President Ho Chi Minh and a formal ceremony marking the anniversary.

Exhibitions and scientific seminars will also be organized to highlight the city’s major achievements over the past 50 years, as well as discussions on the drafting of the Special Urban Law.

A wide range of cultural, artistic, and sports activities will take place, including a walking campaign, art performances, an international 3D mapping exchange program, and a live, multi-point television broadcast connecting multiple locations.

At 9:00 pm on July 2, the city will stage a fireworks display.

As part of key infrastructure projects celebrating the occasion, Ho Chi Minh City will complete and put into use 70 projects, including 1,251 newly built classrooms.

The city will also launch several major projects, including the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh railway, the Ho Tram-Long Thanh airport expressway, and the expansion of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

Other planned developments include the Can Gio international seaport complex, the Cai Mep Ha container port, and a Can Gio–Vung Tau sea-crossing bridge or tunnel.

The city will seek strategic investors for the international financial center project.

On this occasion, Ho Chi Minh City will launch a citywide emulation campaign across the entire political system, focusing on several groups of activities.

These include the promotion of Ho Chi Minh cultural values; rural development and civilized urban projects; social welfare projects; projects supporting the homeland’s seas and islands and the nation’s frontline forces; and initiatives related to national security, fire prevention and firefighting, and rescue operations.

The campaign also seeks to foster aspirations for a ‘civilized, modern and compassionate’ city.
