The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed banning sleeper buses from entering the inner-city area around the clock instead of between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm every day.
Sleeper buses will be prohibited from traveling into the inner city area bounded by National Highway No. 1 – Nguyen Van Linh Street – Vo Chi Cong Street – Nguyen Thi Dinh Street – Dong Van Cong Street – Mai Chi Tho Boulevard – Hanoi Highway – National Highway 1.
The department has issued a report on the implementation of the ban on sleeper buses from entering the inner-city area from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm every day.
In particular, traffic in the downtown area has become better. Individuals and transport firms have basically complied with the prohibition.
However, several sleeper buses regularly stop on the streets near the inner-city area for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, causing traffic disorder and posing a high risk of traffic accidents.
Unlicensed coach stations have also mushroomed along these streets.
The municipal authorities have fined 51 sleeper buses for deliberately entering the inner-city area during the period between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm.
The Department of Transport asked the municipal police, Thu Duc City, and districts to enhance patrols and handling of violators.
The department will propose the municipal People’s Committee allow sleeper buses running on fixed routes leading to and out of the Mien Tay (Western) Coach Station in Binh Tan District to operate on the routes without time restrictions.
Government agencies will give comments on the department’s proposal until May 30 before the department sent the proposal to the People’s Committee for consideration and approval.
At present, Ho Chi Minh City prohibits sleeper buses from traveling into the inner city area between 6:00 am to 10:00 pm every day.
However, sleeper buses are not restricted from operating on corridors leading to and out of the Mien Tay Coach Station in Binh Tan District (National Highway 1 – Kinh Duong Vuong Street – Mien Tay Coach Station and vice versa) and the Mien Dong (Eastern) Coach Station in Binh Thanh District (National Highway 1 – National Highway 13 – Dinh Bo Linh Street – old Mien Dong Coach Station and vice versa).
