Ho Chi Minh City volunteers assist motorbike travelers on homebound journeys for Tet

Volunteer-run ‘rest stops’ have provided water, food, and basic assistance to workers, students, and families traveling by motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City to their hometowns for the Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, due this week.

The rest stops were set up along major gateway routes leading out of the city, offering free bottled drinking water, fresh milk, wet wipes, and snacks to ease fatigue for travelers, especially elderly riders, children, and those facing long journeys home for Tet reunions.

Volunteers also offer mechanical support such as free tire repairs, tire inflation, chain oiling, and minor repairs, ensuring travelers can continue safely.

The program is organized by Trung My Tay Ward Youth Union in cooperation with the youth unions of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, University of Labor and Social Affairs, local traffic police, fire and rescue teams, and community support groups.

Traffic officers and firefighters also use the stops to promote road safety and emergency response skills.

Another Tet-themed program distributed 2,000 bottles of herbal tea, 2,400 bottles of drinking water, 150 traditional 'banh chung' (square sticky rice cakes), and emergency aid packages between Wednesday and Friday in Thu Dau Mot Ward.

In Thoi An Ward, volunteers handed out more than 10,000 bottles of drinking water and served 350 free noodle meals on Friday alone.

Similar efforts took place in Binh Hung Commune, where free drinks were offered along Nguyen Van Linh Street, and in Phu Giao Commune, where youth groups and local police distributed 1,500 portions of drinking water, soft drinks, milk, cakes, and wet wipes.

Organizers said the small gifts carry big meaning, helping ease the hardship of long-distance travel and spreading warmth during Vietnam’s most important holiday.
