Approved by the municipal People's Committee in mid-February, the renovation project, whose investor is the District 1 Construction Investment Project Management Board, was estimated to carry a price tag of VND145 billion (US$5.5 million).
A representative from the board told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday afternoon that three key project components are currently being finalized.
These include the demolition and reconstruction of the surrounding road system, the creation of a new square with landscaped green areas and public installations, and the casting and relocation of statues.
Road construction documents are anticipated to be approved before June 30, allowing for contractor selection and a planned groundbreaking ceremony in August.
The work is expected to be completed within 90 days, wrapping up before the end of November.
Meanwhile, final designs for the public square and landscaped zones are being completed.
Work on the square and green space is set to begin before September 30 and finish by year-end.
On June 19, the investor submitted a proposal to the municipal Department of Construction and the Department of Culture and Sports for design approval for the casting of Tran Nguyen Han Statue and the relocation of Quach Thi Trang Statue.
Results of this review are expected in July.
Once completed, the area in front of Ben Thanh Market will be transformed into an open dynamic public space, with pedestrian walkways connecting with the metro system and major routes.
The site holds deep symbolic significance for Ho Chi Minh City, with Ben Thanh Market serving as a longstanding hub of commerce and tourism.
The redevelopment project is expected to strengthen the appeal of downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
The municipal Department of Construction emphasized its ongoing collaboration with relevant units to ensure high-quality design standards and timely execution across all project phases.
