The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security said officers in 30 provinces and cities, excluding four flood-hit localities, inspected 5,591 parking lots in and around schools on Tuesday.

They found 48,059 students riding motorbikes without valid licenses, including 43,988 cases inside school parking areas and 4,071 cases in nearby lots.

Police also discovered 54 vehicles containing weapons and 22,758 cases involving non-standard helmets.

Authorities summoned 45,459 parents to inform them of the violations and require written commitments not to allow their children to drive illegally.

The department said police had also asked 11,905 schools to comply with regulations banning parking services for unlicensed students’ motorbikes.

“With so many violations, questions must be raised about the responsibility of schools and parents for the safety of their children,” a police official said.

The inspections were part of a nationwide campaign launched by the traffic police to improve road safety among students.
