In Vietnam, well-paying domestic service apps struggle to find workers

With lucrative hourly rates and an eager customer base, home cleaning platforms in Vietnam face a good problem to have: market demand is far outstripping supply.

Hourly-rate cleaning workers in major Vietnamese cities such as Ho Chi Minh City earned an average of VND33 million (US$1,260) a month, not including customer tips, according to bTaskee, one of the most popular players of the field.

Despite the attractive pay, the company said it is still struggling to recruit enough hands to meet demand.

bTaskee has a network of more than 15,000 gig partners, or freelance workers, operating in four Southeast Asian countries.

In Vietnam, it has presence in 21 provinces and cities, a company representative told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper.

The VND33 million figure represented an average for those who maintained a steady schedule, worked diligently and received positive customer ratings on the app.

Standard hourly rates currently range between VND80,000 ($3) and VND120,000 ($4.56).

Under a 'Price by Demand' mechanism, workers' earnings could rise 50 percent or more during evenings, weekends, and holidays including Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year).

"Rising customer demand has forced us to recruit continuously. We currently still need to add more than 500 cleaning collaborators in the Ho Chi Minh City area," the company representative said.

To attract more workers, bTaskee has rolled out a referral program.

Under the scheme, a person who refers a new collaborator receives VND200,000 ($7.6) once that new recruit joins successfully, and an additional VND100,000 if the referree completes at least 20 jobs and maintains a rating of 4.8 stars or higher within 30 days of starting.

Some collaborators earn extra income beyond their core duties by creating social media channels for home-care tips, where they monetize through advertising and affiliate marketing, bTaskee said.

The representative cited a collaborator who has built a TikTok channel of nearly 10,000 followers and a Facebook page of some 22,000.

This large following helps her earn up to an additional VND40 million ($1,519.5) a month through content creation and affiliate marketing.

According to the Digital 2026 Vietnam report by DataReportal, Vietnam had about 85.6 million Internet users, or 84.2 percent of its population, along with 137 million mobile connections.

The growing reach of the Internet and smartphones has supported strong growth in app-based services.

bTaskee said shifting consumer habits were creating more job opportunities, particularly for female freelance workers.

Along with the spread of technology and smartphones and the busy pace of urban life, young, higher-income customers were increasingly turning to app-based household services, the company said.
