Kenyan runner shares deep love for Vietnam

Although Edwin Kiptoo, a runner from Kenya, only recently began participating in races in Vietnam, he has quickly fallen in love with the country and its people.

"I truly love Vietnam. The people here are amazing," Kiptoo shared in a recent media interview.

Kiptoo first came to Vietnam in late 2023 to compete in a major race in Ho Chi Minh City. At the time, his primary goal was to place high and win prize money to support his family in Kenya.

However, things were not easy at first. He struggled to find accommodation and was unfamiliar with the roads.

Fortunately, a Vietnamese runner stepped in to help him find a place to stay. With proper rest, Kiptoo performed excellently and won first place in the marathon category, taking home a prize of VND70 million (US$2,660).

That initial experience marked the beginning of Kiptoo’s strong connection to Vietnam.

Since then, he has become a familiar face in Vietnam's running community, regularly appearing at major races and often winning. In 2024 alone, he claimed victory in at least seven major competitions.

Despite a dip in performance this year due to injury, Kiptoo's presence and image continue to grow in popularity, making him one of the most recognized runners at major Vietnamese events.

Kiptoo realized he wanted a deeper connection with Vietnam. He has since made frequent returns, and his social media is filled almost exclusively with photos from races held across Vietnam.

"I’ve run in many places around the world, especially in Asia. But truly, Vietnam has such beautiful and poetic landscapes. I always remember the stunning routes in Hue, Tay Ninh, and big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City," he said.

"The people here are also amazing—friendly, hospitable, and always willing to help others. That’s why I love Vietnam so much," Kiptoo added.

Beyond his affection for the country, Kiptoo has also expressed plans to help develop the sport of running in Vietnam.

On his social media, he often encourages people to join a running group he manages, aimed at building friendships, sharing experiences, and organizing meetups for races across the country.

Most recently, Kiptoo confirmed his long-term commitment to Vietnam by joining the Zocker Running Team—a newly formed group that already includes notable Vietnamese runners such as Le Van Tuan, Mao Quoc Toi, Truong Tri Tam, Sung Pao, Vong Vanh Long, and Le Huu Loc.

These athletes are among the most experienced and accomplished in Vietnam’s running scene.

"Running in Vietnam has developed rapidly. That’s why I want to contribute to improving the quality of athletes and races here, so the world can know more about Vietnam.

"I’ll be in Vietnam more often to compete and begin working on my own projects," Kiptoo shared.
