Korean Canadian sentenced to 7 years in prison for robbery in Vietnam

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court on Wednesday sentenced Jang Jae Bin, a 24-year-old Canadian national of South Korean descent, to seven years in prison for robbery.

According to the indictment, Jang entered Vietnam as a tourist on January 12 last year through Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

During his stay in the country, he rented an apartment in a local residential complex.

Due to his financial difficulty, he devised a plan to steal from others in order to obtain money for his needs.

Between February 17 and 18, 2024, Jang committed two robberies in Ho Chi Minh City.

Jang targeted foreign nationals, using a knife to threaten his victims and seize their mobile phones, valued at VND5.4 million (US$212).

As per Article 168 of the 2015 Criminal Code stipulating the crime of robbery, any individual who uses a weapon, dangerous tools, or other dangerous methods to steal property shall be sentenced to imprisonment from seven to 15 years.
