Landslide kills 3, injures 4 in north-central Vietnam

Three workers died and four others were injured after their tent was buried in a landslide in Ha Tinh Province, north-central Vietnam on Monday afternoon, a local official said the same day.

The incident triggered by a heavy downpour took place at 2:30 pm on Monday at the construction site of a 500kV power transmission line through Ky Anh Town, Ha Tinh Province.

At the time, 18 workers were sheltering from the rain, said Nguyen The Anh, vice-chairman of the administration in Ky Anh Town.

Eleven of them escaped from the incident, the official informed.

Upon receiving the news, leaders of the provincial authorities, police, and military forces rushed to the scene of the incident to direct the rescue work.

The four injured workers were immediately taken to the Ky Anh Town General Hospital, while the bodies of the three fatalities were moved off-site.

Hoang Dinh Thuy, who was injured in the landslide, said he and 17 other workers were dispatched to the construction site of the power transmission line three days earlier.

Only 15 minutes after they returned to the tent due to the rain, a large volume of soil and rocks fell onto their tent.

The incident happened in only five seconds, so many workers failed to escape, Thuy added.
