A weak but impactful cold front is expected to begin influencing the region from the night of Wednesday.
The system will first affect the northeastern provinces before extending its reach to parts of the northwest and the north-central region.
Starting from Thursday, temperatures across the northeast and Thanh Hoa are forecast to drop, ranging between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius.
In mountainous areas, temperatures could fall below 20 degrees Celsius.
Hanoi is forecast to see showers and scattered thunderstorms from the night of Wednesday through Thursday, followed by cooler conditions with temperatures ranging from 22 to 24 degrees Celsius.
The cold air mass, combined with upper-level wind convergence, is likely to trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms across northern Vietnam from the evening of Wednesday through Thursday.
Some areas may experience heavy rainfall.
The north-central region might experience showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday, while many central provinces are forecast to see rain and thunderstorms from Thursday to Saturday.
Meteorologists warn that the seasonal transition heightens the risk of severe weather, including whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusty winds during thunderstorms.
The incoming cooler air follows a period of intense heat in several regions.
On Tuesday, heatwaves were recorded from Ha Tinh to Hue, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in some areas.
Northeastern provinces saw daytime highs between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius, while the northwest recorded 32 to 34 degrees Celsius.
Southern Vietnam also continued to experience hot conditions, with temperatures commonly ranging from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius, and higher in some locations.
