Low-pressure system forecast to bring peak rainfall to southern Vietnam

Southern Vietnam is forecast to experience its most severe weather of the current heavy-rain spell on Wednesday as the intertropical convergence zone remains active and a low-pressure circulation over the sea might move inland across the region.

The southern weather center has described the current spell as the heaviest rainfall seen in southern Vietnam since the beginning of the year.

Extremely heavy rainfall has been recorded in several areas over the past two days, with some locations receiving more than 100 millimeters within 24 hours.

Widespread cloud cover and early rainfall are forecast across southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday.

Downpours may continue for much of the day, with the heaviest conditions expected from midday through the evening.

The center warns of a high risk of serious flooding in many areas, while thunderstorms may bring tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.

The weather pattern is expected to remain unsettled on Thursday and Friday.

Although the intertropical convergence zone will remain active, the low-pressure system is forecast to move westward.

Southern localities will continue to see widespread rain, but the intensity of the downpours is expected to ease compared with Wednesday.

From Friday onward, rainfall across southern Vietnam is forecast to gradually decrease in both coverage and intensity.
