The Center for Disease Control in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province has announced information regarding this suspected rabies-related death.
The deceased was H.C.V.E., born in 1977, living in Phu My City, who passed away at the end of last month.
According to local authorities, before his death, E. had been bitten by dogs twice but did not receive rabies vaccinations.
The most recent incident occurred around February 2024, when he was bitten on the lower leg by a neighbor’s dog, which caused superficial skin abrasions.
The dog did not show abnormal signs and was later stolen.
The earlier incident took place around August 2020, when he was bitten on the right calf, resulting in scratches and bleeding.
That dog is still alive and has not shown any signs of illness.
Reports indicate that E. initially exhibited symptoms such as fatigue and difficulty swallowing.
His family took him to the hospital after he experienced shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, extremely high blood pressure, a rapid pulse, and fast breathing.
Despite intensive treatment, his condition did not improve and additional symptoms characteristic of rabies began to appear, including fear of wind, fear of water, and neurological instability.
By the afternoon of April 21, doctors advised transferring him to a higher-level hospital, but his family declined and requested to take him home.
Upon discharge, the patient experienced a hypertensive emergency and was monitored for a potential stroke, bronchial asthma, and suspected rabies.
He passed away later that evening.
Health authorities urge the public to seek immediate medical attention and receive timely rabies vaccinations after being bitten or scratched by dogs, cats, or other animals to avoid potentially fatal consequences.
