As rain in Hanoi subsided on Wednesday morning, many schools allowed students to return to in-person classes. However, some continued online learning due to lingering flooding in nearby areas.

After closely assessing local conditions, several inner-city schools permitted students to resume direct learning.

According to administrators at Nguyen Du Middle School in Dai Mo Ward, Nam Phuong Tien A Middle School in Xuan Mai Commune, and Chuong Duong Middle School in Hong Ha Ward, water had receded in surrounding neighborhoods, and improved weather allowed them to reopen.

At Doan Ket Hai Ba Trung High School, an announcement was made at 5:50 am on Wednesday allowing students to return.

Those living in flooded areas were permitted to stay home, and homeroom teachers compiled attendance lists so the school could plan make-up lessons and ensure no student fell behind.

In Xuan Mai Commune, although classes resumed, water levels in the Tich and Bui Rivers remained high.

Schools are continuing to monitor conditions and are ready to switch back to online learning if necessary.

Meanwhile, several schools maintained online classes or gave younger students the day off.

These included Trung Hoa Middle School, Xuan Phuong Middle School, Tay Mo Middle School, Doan Thi Diem High School, Nghia Do Elementary School, and Nghia Tan Elementary School.

Schools conducting online lessons urged parents to help supervise their children's learning at home.

Some schools decided to remain closed after assessing the flooding situation, while others consulted parents through class group chats before finalizing plans on Wednesday morning.

In some cases, midterm exams were postponed due to the flooding.

Amid ongoing impacts from storm Matmo, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training advised school principals to stay informed of weather forecasts and make decisions based on actual conditions, infrastructure readiness, and student safety.

Schools may choose in-person, online, or hybrid formats and adjust schedules as needed.

Plans must also ensure safety for students and staff and support disadvantaged learners.

Storm Matmo, the 11th to form in the East Vietnam Sea this year, made landfall in Guangxi Province, southern China early on Monday, bringing heavy rain to northern Vietnam.
