Vietnam’s military engineering unit on Tuesday brought equipment for the installation of a pontoon bridge to the area of the Phong Chau Bridge in Phu Tho Province, which had collapsed the previous day.

They prepared 78 pieces of machines and equipment and mobilized 198 military officers.

The unit will install the floating bridge once weather conditions and the water flow in the Red River are stable.

Lieutenant General Pham Duc Duyen, secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of Military Region 2, said the Ministry of National Defense had tasked the military engineering unit with completing preparations and surveying the water flow to install the pontoon bridge.

A preliminary report from the Phu Tho Department of Transport indicated that the collapse was caused by typhoon Yagi.

The rising water levels of the Red River damaged a pillar, leading to the collapse of two main spans of the Phong Chau Bridge.
