Nearly 100 soldiers clear debris to prevent overflow at Da Nang spillway

Nearly 100 officers and soldiers from Military Region 5 were deployed early on Monday morning to clear debris blocking the Hoa Tien spillway in Da Nang City, central Vietnam, as rising floodwaters from upstream posed a risk of overflow.

The Military Region 5 Command is tasked with organizing, building, managing, and commanding the armed forces in five central and Central Highlands localities, including Da Nang, Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, and Quang Ngai.

Colonel Tran Huu Ich, chief of the Da Nang Military Command, said the force was stationed at the spillway in Hoa Tien Commune to remove logs, branches, and waste swept downstream during days of continuous heavy rain.

During an on-site inspection on Monday morning, Colonel Ich urged the Cam Le civil defense steering committee to coordinate with local authorities to remove the large volume of accumulated debris, warning that blockages could cause water to rise rapidly and threaten nearby farmlands and residential areas.

Floodwaters have brought down significant amounts of timber and waste, which became trapped beneath the bridge, obstructing the current and raising water levels.

To prevent overflow and potential spillway damage, nearly 100 soldiers, local militiamen, and residents worked continuously to pull out debris and clear the flow, while maintaining a 24-hour watch at the spillway site.

Also on Monday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huu Thang, deputy chief of the Da Nang Military Command, directed the formation of a forward command post for flood response in Dai Loc Commune, one of the city’s areas facing severe flooding risk.

He instructed the deployment of forces and motorboats and canoes to assist isolated communities, deliver essential supplies, and ensure residents’ safety in inundated areas.
