The head of the Traffic Police Department described the figure as alarming.
According to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, on Saturday, traffic police across Vietnam began the nationwide crackdown on alcohol-related violations.
Between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm, police units checked 63,240 drivers, including 1,860 long-haul buses, 3,128 trucks, 16,051 cars, 41,067 motorbikes, and 1,131 rudimentary vehicles.
They discovered 2,523 violations, involving two long-haul buses, 10 trucks, 82 cars, 2,401 motorbikes, and 28 rudimentary vehicles.
Localities with the highest number of violations included Bac Ninh (259), Hai Phong (207), Phu Tho (198), An Giang (187), Lao Cai (179), and Thai Nguyen (174).
In total, on the first day of the campaign, traffic police inspected 111,542 drivers nationwide.
They issued violation reports to 3,829 drivers for alcohol-related offenses.
Major General Do Thanh Binh, head of the Traffic Police Department, said the results highlight a concerning habit among a portion of drivers who continue to disregard alcohol regulations.
He also noted that although large cities recorded high numbers of violations, these figures still underestimate the real number of violations.
The department affirmed that the campaign will be conducted regularly and continuously, including during weekends and holidays.
The ultimate goal is to establish a nationwide habit of not driving after drinking.
