New US Ambassador Jennifer Wicks introduces herself in Hanoi

Wicks recalled growing up in Minnesota, “a special place known as the land of 10,000 lakes, with communities known for their friendly Minnesota spirit marked by resilience, hard work, and a deep connection to the land and community – a spirit I believe that Vietnam also shares.”

She shared memories of summer camping trips by Lake Superior and visits to the state fair.

Her parents still live in a small town in Minnesota, about an hour south of the Twin Cities.

She has spent her career in U.S. government service, including roles in the military and the Department of State.

Over the past decade, she has guided more than 1,000 foreign policy leaders through the confirmation and appointment process, working closely with the White House and Congress.

Now in Hanoi, she said she has already visited the iconic Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature, and joined Vietnamese friends in celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence Day.

Wicks emphasized that U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have highlighted the geo-political and strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region, with Vietnam considered one of the U.S.’s most critical partners in the region.

“A strong, independent, and resilient Vietnam is in the United States’ interest,” the diplomat said.

“And I plan to work every day to advance shared interests that make both of our countries more safe, secure, and prosperous.”

She also mentioned her recent meeting with Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, where both sides discussed the importance of advancing the Vietnam-U.S. comprehensive strategic partnership.

“He said that we have no time to lose, and I agree completely. With our full and future-oriented agenda, there is so much we can do together,” Wicks said.

She added that her agenda will focus on trade and investment, defense and security cooperation, and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Wicks arrived in Hanoi on July 1 and presented her credentials to Party chief and State President To Lam on July 6, officially beginning her diplomatic mission in Vietnam.

She is the ninth U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since both countries normalized their diplomatic ties in 1995, and notably the first Asian-American woman to hold the post.

Closing her video, Wicks invited viewers to join her for a cup of ‘ca phe sua da’ (iced coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk), symbolizing her respect for local culture and her enthusiasm for building a dynamic bilateral relationship.
