Hanoi Capital High Command suggests reducing Liberation Day fireworks

The Hanoi Capital High Command has proposed setting off fireworks at only one venue in Hoan Kiem District to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Vietnamese capital's Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024) instead of 30 venues as earlier planned.

The fireworks display at Hoan Kiem Lake is scheduled to take place from 9:30 pm to 9:45 pm on October 10.

The reduction comes while Vietnam is focusing efforts on rebuilding after typhoon Yagi and supporting those impacted.

Typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in northern Vietnam earlier this month, killed more than 290 people and left huge destruction across the region.

It is the most powerful storm to have entered the East Vietnam Sea over the past 30 years and the worst typhoon to have hit Vietnam in the last 70 years.

The municipal government's original plan was to display fireworks in 30 districts and towns, including a high-low-altitude pyrotechnic show at My Dinh National Stadium in Nam Tu Liem District, featuring 800 fireworks shells and 24 pyrotechnics with 480 tubes.

Other fireworks displays were planned across the capital city.
