Northern Vietnam turns cooler from Sunday night

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold air mass was approaching Vietnam’s northern border on Sunday morning, with showers and thunderstorms already affecting mountainous areas in the northeast and northwest.

The cold air is expected to reach the northeast on Sunday evening and night before spreading across the rest of northern Vietnam and the areas from Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City.

From Sunday night, temperatures in the northeast and Thanh Hoa will drop, with lows of 19-22 degrees Celsius and 14-17 degrees Celsius in high mountainous areas.

Hanoi is forecast to experience rain, moderate rain, and thunderstorms from Sunday evening through Monday morning, with localized heavy rain. The weather will turn cooler toward dawn on Monday.

Due to the cold air mass, northern Vietnam could see rain, moderate rain, and thunderstorms through Monday morning, with rainfall of 20-50mm in most areas and localized totals exceeding 150mm.

Rain will then shift southward, affecting the areas from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh Province on Sunday night before expanding to Quang Tri Province and Hue from Monday to Tuesday.

Thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning, hail, strong gusts, and tornadoes, while heavy rain could trigger flash floods, landslides, and flooding in low-lying areas.

Strong winds forecast at sea

From around dawn on Monday, northeasterly winds over the Gulf of Tonkin are forecast to strengthen to level 6, at times reaching level 7, with gusts of level 8-9.

Waves are expected to reach two to three meters.

Strong northeasterly winds of level 6-7 are also forecast over the northern East Vietnam Sea, with gusts of level 8-9 and waves of two to four meters.

From Tuesday, the area affected by strong winds is expected to expand across the northern East Vietnam Sea, including Hoang Sa (Paracel) Special Zone.

Ho Chi Minh City, southern Vietnam face rain through October 10

Meanwhile, the intertropical convergence zone has become established over southern Vietnam, increasing rainfall across the region.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center said moderate to heavy rain will mainly occur in the late afternoon and evening through October 10, although rain may also develop in the morning on some days.

Urban areas, including Ho Chi Minh City, should be alert to heavy rain during the evening rush hour, which could cause localized flooding and disrupt traffic.

Rainfall is expected to gradually ease after October 10 as the convergence zone shifts southward and weakens.
