Northern Vietnam hit by widespread power failure

The northern power grid system encountered a malfunction

The northern region of Vietnam reported a massive blackout on Monday afternoon that affected several provinces and cities, including Hanoi.

The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) said in a brief statement that its northern power grid system encountered a malfunction causing blackouts in multiple northern localities.

“The cause was initially determined as increased electricity consumption because of hot weather and a number of generator sets having voltage fluctuations,” the statement reads.

The National Load Dispatch Center under EVN coordinated with power source and grid operators in restoring power by 3:00 pm the same day.

However, damage to appliances and electronics occurred when the power came back on and the network voltage was higher than the usual amount, according to the accounts of many customers in Hanoi and northern Vinh Phuc Province.

EVN apologized for the massive power outage and the knock-on consequences on equipment and appliances in its statement.
