Over 20,000 bird traps dismantled in Vietnam’s Ha Tinh

Authorities in Ha Tinh Province, north-central Vietnam have destroyed more than 20,000 traps set to capture migratory birds, releasing dozens of live decoys back into the wild as part of a campaign to protect wildlife during the migration season.

The provincial Forest Protection Department reported that 20,109 tools and devices used for hunting and trapping wild birds were confiscated and destroyed.

Officials also released 110 live decoy birds and those caught in traps back into their natural habitat, while one violator was fined VND3 million (US$115).

September marks the start of the annual migration season for many wild birds, when flocks stop to rest and feed in coastal fields and forests, making them vulnerable to traps set by hunters.

Since early September, forest rangers in Ha Tinh have worked with police and local authorities to patrol rural areas, dismantle traps, and raise public awareness about protecting migratory species.

The campaign follows an August directive from the Ha Tinh administration calling for stronger measures to safeguard wild and migratory birds.
