Parents flout traffic rules while picking up children at Ho Chi Minh City schools

At Nguyen Binh Khiem Elementary School in Saigon Ward, many parents were seen riding motorbikes onto sidewalks or going against traffic to avoid congestion during school dismissal.

Despite carrying crash helmets, most parents did not make their children wear them.

A resident living near the school elaborated that the problem worsens at the rush hour when students rush out of the school and quickly hop onto their parents’ motorbikes without wearing helmets.

Some others complained that parking disorder in front of schools also adds to traffic jams.

Similar scenes were observed at Vo Truong Toan Middle School in Saigon Ward and Nguyen Van Be Middle School in Binh Loi Trung Ward.

In related news, the city’s traffic police unit recently announced plans to coordinate with the municipal Department of Education and Training to step up inspections at schools, urging administrators to sign commitments to enforce traffic safety regulations.

Schools are also asked to take disciplinary measures against violators and refuse to keep motorbikes over 50cc for underage students.

Police urged parents to set examples to their children, stop unsafe practices, and cooperate with schools and authorities to promote road safety awareness.
