A still image taken from a video shows passengers using umbrellas inside a train of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line in Hanoi due to leaking water.
The footage shows water dripping steadily from the ceiling of a passenger car, forcing passengers to either open umbrellas or relocate to drier areas within the carriage.
The incident reportedly occurred at 5:20 pm on Monday aboard a metro train.
Nguyen Thanh Binh, who captured and posted the video, commented, “I'm nearly 50 years old and have never seen anything like this anywhere in the world—passengers having to use umbrellas inside a metro train.”
In response to the growing public concern, Hanoi Metro, which operates the metro line, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday that the firm had issued a statement confirming the cause of the leak.
Immediately after receiving reports, the metro operator dispatched personnel to assist affected passengers and clean the train’s interior.
The train was then directed to Phu Luong Depot for a full inspection and maintenance.
The problem originated from a technical fault in the air conditioning control system, which disrupted the water drainage process and caused water to spill into the passenger cabin.
Hanoi Metro stated that technical experts had been brought in to coordinate with the maintenance team to resolve the issue on Tuesday.
The operator also confirmed that a comprehensive inspection of all trains’ air conditioning systems is underway to ensure safety and operational quality.
The Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro trains and related systems were manufactured and delivered to Vietnam in 2017.
Hanoi Metro revealed plans to submit a proposal to the municipal People's Committee to launch a restoration project which includes technical workforce training to maintain long-term safety and reliability of the system.
A Hanoi Metro representative said that the incident caused inconvenience and hygiene concerns, calling it an unexpected and regrettable event.
“We sincerely apologize to our passengers. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” the representative said.
The city’s first metro line was put into service in November 2021.
