By 2050, the airport is projected to handle 18 million passengers and 50,000 metric tons of cargo per year.

The provincial administration on Tuesday held a working session with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to discuss airport management and development plans within the province.

Phu Quoc International Airport, currently rated as a 4E-class facility, features a single runway, and serves around four million passengers and 5,000 metric tons of cargo annually.

The expansion of the airport is aligned with the government’s resolution No. 01/2025, which outlines investment priorities for infrastructure to support the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2027.

The Ministry of Construction will transfer airport infrastructure assets to the provincial administration, enabling the province to oversee project execution.

The province will select a domestic investor to ensure the airport serves both civil and military purposes.

Chairman of ACV Vu The Phiet confirmed that the corporation had reviewed and valued state-owned assets for transfer to local authorities.

He stated that operations at Phu Quoc International Airport will continue uninterrupted during the transition period.

Meanwhile, Rach Gia Airport, built in the 1960s and later upgraded in 1997 and again between 2006 and 2007, is operational, but it has seen a significant drop in passenger numbers.

Traffic declined to 33,390 in 2023 and just 9,536 in 2024 from over 51,250 passengers in 2022.

Under the long-term development plan, Rach Gia Airport is expected to be upgraded to a 4C classification for domestic flights and serve dual civilian-military purposes.

By 2030, it aims to handle 500,000 passengers per year, increasing to one million annually by 2050.

Nguyen Thanh Nhan, chairman of the Kien Giang People’s Committee, said that the province is planning to build Rach Gia into a multifunctional hub that can connect with Phu Quoc.
