At noon on Friday, Nhat was driving his pickup truck with his daughter when he stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Provincial Road 825 and Ba Sa-Go Moi Street in the province.
A car driven by N.V.H., 64, from Ho Chi Minh City, overtook Nhat’s vehicle on the left and struck the driver’s side door.
Both men then exited their vehicles.
Witnesses said Nhat punched H. three times in the temple, causing him to collapse, then kicked him once in the left side.
H. lost consciousness immediately.
Nhat and bystanders placed the victim in Nhat’s truck and drove him to the hospital.
Security camera footage of the assault quickly spread online, sparking widespread outrage over the violent act in public.
Doctors reported H. suffered severe brain hemorrhaging and was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Despite emergency treatment, he died on Saturday evening.
Investigators initially detained Nhat for disturbing public order.
With the victim’s death, investigators are reviewing the case, assessing additional potential criminal offenses, and handling the matter in accordance with the law.
