Provincial traffic police said Thursday morning that they had detained N.V.D., a 19-year-old resident of Phu Binh Commune, for investigation on suspicion of resisting law enforcement officers.
The incident occurred at around 12:00 pm on Wednesday, when a traffic police team was conducting breath alcohol checks on drivers at a checkpoint along National Highway 37 in Phu Binh Commune.
Officers spotted D. riding a motorcycle without a license plate and without a left rearview mirror.
When signaled to stop, D. initially slowed down but then suddenly accelerated in an apparent attempt to flee.
The motorcycle struck a traffic police officer standing ahead, knocking him onto the road, while D. and the vehicle also fell after the impact.
Police quickly restrained D., seized the vehicle, recorded his arrest for resisting persons performing official duties, and took him to their office for questioning and further investigation.
D. admitted he had tried to flee and deliberately drove into the officer because he feared being stopped and penalized.
Following the incident, the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security has urged motorists to strictly comply with officers’ stop orders and inspection procedures while on the road.
Authorities warned that acts of resistance, such as those committed by D., may lead to criminal prosecution for resisting persons performing official duties under the Vietnamese Penal Code.
