Four police officers in Soc Trang Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, have been suspended from work after some of them were filmed beating up a resident last weekend.
Lam Thanh Sol, director of the Department of Public Security of Soc Trang, said on Wednesday night that he had requested the subdivision in Vinh Chau Town, where Lieutenant N.Q.T., Captain C.M.T., Captain H.T.A., and Senior Lieutenant D.T.P. were working, to submit a report on the case.
A five-minute video circulating online showed that two residents stopped their motorbike at a shrimp trading facility in Vinh Chau’s Vinh Hai Commune before N.Q.T., who wore a yellow uniform, and C.M.T., who wore a green uniform, arrived on a police motorcycle at around 3:35 pm on September 25.
After dismounting from their police motorcycle, N.Q.T. and C.M.T. took turns using their hands, feet, and a helmet to hit the driver of the other motorbike.
H.T.A. and D.T.P., both in green uniforms, arrived at the scene shortly after.
The physical assault took place after N.Q.T. and C.M.T. had attempted to pull the two citizens over on a section of Nam Song Hau Street in Vinh Phuoc Ward to check the driver’s license.
The driver refused to stop their motorbike and fled the scene, prompting a police chase.
The two police officers then called for reinforcement from H.T.A. and D.T.P. during the high-speed pursuit that ended at the shrimp facility, whose CCTV camera captured the entire physical attack against the driver in question.
Soc Trang chairman Tran Van Lau has demanded a report on the incident by Thursday.
“I was very angry after watching the clip,” Lau said, adding that local authorities will strictly deal with the individuals involved.
