Police probe street brawl in Ho Chi Minh City’s ‘backpacker area’

The footage of the incident has gone viral on social media since Saturday

Police in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating a street brawl that broke out in ‘backpacker area’ on early Saturday morning after a video clip of the incident went viral on social media.

According to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, the incident happened at around 12:30 am on Bui Vien Street in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1.

It all started with an argument between a man, who was a customer of a beer shop along the street, and an employee of the next-door beer parlor.

They two then engaged in a fight, before their friends also joined the physical confrontation.

Each of the two groups had two to three people, the source stated.

Some of them were injured following the violence, but no one reported the incident to local police.

Officers were informed of the street brawl after a video of it was uploaded to social media the same day.

In the clip, which was less than a minute long, many men and women were attacking one another with tables, chairs, and wooden batons. Many of them appeared to be drunk.

They made a huge scene along Bui Vien Street, a major route within the city’s ‘backpacker area.’

Officers then arrived at the location to examine the scene and collect statements from eyewitnesses.
