$155mn waste-to-energy plant, largest in central Vietnam, breaks ground

Hanoi-based Galax JSC, a company within the ecosystem of Amaccao Group, a Vietnamese multi-industry corporation, held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nghe An waste-to-energy plant at the Nghi Yen solid waste treatment complex in Hai Loc Commune.

The project covers nearly 7.2 hectares, including about 2.1 hectares earmarked for green space, and has a total investment of VND4.056 trillion (nearly $155 million), according to Galax JSC, the project's investor.

Upon completion, the plant will be capable of treating 1,500 metric tons of waste per day and generating 30MW of electricity.

The facility is currently the largest waste-to-energy project being implemented in central Vietnam and is among the larger projects of its kind in Vietnam, according to the developer.

The plant uses advanced technology to improve municipal waste treatment, reduce landfilling and produce electricity from waste.

Specifically, the plant will use Martin waste-incineration technology from Germany, which Amaccao describes as one of the world's advanced technologies for generating electricity from waste.

The project is designed to meet European standards for emissions and dust, while its wastewater will meet Class A standards for treated wastewater, the company said.

Emissions will be monitored through an online monitoring system, with data transmitted to state management agencies and displayed publicly at the plant entrance so local residents can monitor the results, according to the developer.

Amaccao said it plans to complete construction and equipment installation and begin operating the plant in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Phung Thanh Vinh, deputy chairman of the Nghe An administration, said the plant is expected to improve waste treatment efficiency, reduce reliance on landfilling and recover energy from waste once it becomes operational.

During construction and operation, the plant must strictly comply with regulations and standards on construction, environmental protection and fire prevention and control; tightly control emissions; fully honor its environmental commitments; and publicly disclose information as required.

Vinh said the project would help improve environmental quality and contribute to developing a greener and more modern Nghi Yen and surrounding areas.

He added that the project aligns with Nghe An's goals of developing a green and circular economy.
