One month after excavation and search efforts began at Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, authorities have discovered the remains of 197 fallen soldiers, including several mass graves that are currently undergoing separation and identification.

Search teams continued their mission at the second excavation site (Zone B) within the grounds of Le Thi Rieng Park on Tuesday, according to the Martyrs’ Remains Search and Collection Team under the Ho Chi Minh City Command.

Forces expanded the search area and removed soil from a suspected burial trench in Zone B, processing more than 200 cubic meters of earth to reach areas believed to contain the remains of fallen soldiers.

The site is located on a raised mound of soil created during previous park renovations, meaning that a very large volume of soil needs to be excavated and transported.

In just the past three days, nearly 1,000 cubic meters of soil has been removed.

The Ho Chi Minh City Command has continued mobilizing three excavators and one dump truck to transport soil, with construction and excavation activities carried out continuously throughout the operation.

Teams working in Zone B discovered and collected 15 sets of martyrs’ remains on Tuesday.

Among them were 11 individual sets of remains, two locations identified as mass graves containing four sets of remains, along with nine groups of accompanying artifacts.

Since June 23, the search teams have discovered and collected a total of 197 sets of martyrs’ remains.

Of these, 171 were individual remains, while 26 were recovered from six mass grave sites.

More than five decades has passed since national reunification, yet many soldiers who sacrificed their lives have still not returned home.

This enduring concern has motivated generations of Vietnamese leaders to mobilize the entire political system in efforts to bring these heroes back to their homeland and reunite them with their families.

The search reflects Vietnam’s long-standing tradition of gratitude and remembrance, embodied in the principles of ‘When drinking water, remember its source’ and ‘Repaying gratitude to those who made sacrifices for the nation.’
